Fairies are among us

Among Others

Among Others by Jo Walton

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This is my first english novel of the year. I choose it carefully, actually, I’m participating on Worlds Without End reading challenge; the idea is to read at least 6 novels that had been win an award on Science Fiction, Fantasy or Horror. In this case, Among Others won the 2012 Nebula Award, that is a prize related to Science Fiction and Fantasy. Jo Walton is a Canadian-Welsh writer who is a big fan of Tolkien and Ursula K Le Guim. To be honest, in my opinion, this book is not that amazing as to receive a Nebula award; however, it represents a kind of guide for Science-Fiction and Fantasy masterpieces from 1979 and earlier years.
Morwenna Phelps is raised by her mad mom, that is actually a kind of witch, trying to gain power and somehow dominate the entire world. Morwenna is release from his mother and star living with his father, that either runaway or get divorced when her daughters born. She is at the school, paid by his father’s sister, that actually seems to understand about magic, just like her mom. When attending school, Morwenna is felt apart form magic, and the only connection with this kind of power is through the books… and some fairies that appears in forests and ruins. She seems to be safe from her mother, now that her twin sister is no longer with her, Morwenna have to resist one last try from her mom to beat her, but she is not alone: fairies are with her.
what I enjoy the most is about all different authors that she was describing inside the story. Not just Tolkien or Le Guim, but also Phillip K Dick, Zelazny, Silverber, Asimov, C Clarke, Heinlein, Bradbury, among others. I was expecting more, the thing that is valuable is all reference to classic SF & Fantasy. Recommended for english intermediate readers.
